What is a business model canvas?

The Business Model Canvas, developed in 2008 by Alexander Osterwalder, a Swiss business theorist, is a visual representation of current or new business models, generally used by strategic managers. The Canvas provides a holistic view of the business and is especially useful in running a comparative analysis on the impact of an increase in investment in any of the contributing factors.
